and undeniably Reg Wexford's favourite daughter.

Sylvia (Charon Bourke) is the Wexfords' eldest daughter and has always lived in the shadow of her more glamorous younger sister. Sylvia, who married at 18 - against her father's wishes - to the reliable but dull Neil, becomes frustrated with her life and battles to forge a career as a social worker.

Reg's wife Dora is played by Louie Ramsay.

Jean Burden (Ann Penfold) is Mike's first wife and mother to Pat and John. When Jean dies, Mike is left heartbroken and struggles to cope with his grief, and his new role as a single parent.

John Burden: Mike's eldest son is played by Noah Huntley. Two months before shooting The Best Man to Die, 15 year-old Noah was involved in a motorbike crash that left him with a damaged pancreas: "The doctors wanted me to stay on at the hospital for a couple more weeks, but I had to rush off to shoot Wexford. I threw myself into the work and coped somehow."

Pat: Mike's daughter is played by Emma Smith.

Mike's second wife Jenny is played by Diane Keen.

Mark is Mike's youngest son. Mark is first seen in
Put On by Cunning following Jenny's fraught pregnancy
