Dora Wexford
Reg is married to Dora and they have two daughters: Sylvia and Sheila. Dora is a calm, perceptive woman and her common sense often prevails in a family crisis. The Wexfords’ are happily married but life with Reg isn’t always easy. Dora has to deal with Reg’s hypertension, Sylvia’s unhappy marriage and Sheila’s awful boyfriends. Dora is described as ‘a woman of few words’. However, her character does develop as the series progresses, and her finest hour comes when she is kidnapped by a terrorist gang in Road Rage.
Louie Ramsay: “I was always grateful to George Baker for my role as Dora, because in the books she hardly appears. George told the producers that Dora should have more of a role in Wexford’s life and they wrote it in. I was thrilled. I like Dora very much. Some people can be quite rude about her. A woman once described her as ‘doormat Dora’ and I defended her fiercely.
Dora is not the strength behind Wexford, but she is quite strong in herself. She knows when to speak and when to remain silent. She is always there for him because she belongs to the generation that didn’t rush out to work. My father was a consultant and my mother never worked, as she looked after him. When she died, he was lost.”
